Bringing Brecken Home

After Brecken was born everything was fine, his Apgar scores were high and we were moved to another room. I had tried to nurse him but he wasn't latching so I showered and tried again later. He still hadn't latched so we tried bottle feeding him which also didn't work. At 6 p.m. when the nurses changed a new nurse came in and said that Brecken had low blood sugar, my thoughts were "obviously... he hasn't eaten anything". She also said that his coloring was "dusky", and his temperature was low so she was going to take him out in the hall so I could rest and she would monitor him. Well... when I woke up Kaile told me that they admitted him into the NICU because they thought he might have an infection. (They never told us what kind, all they said is that sometimes babies get infections from being in the womb too long after the water breaks). So instead of having Brecken in the room with us he was in the NICU for 3 days. The nurses kept on saying how big he was... I guess he was pretty big compared to all the premies that were in the NICU:) While Brecken was in the NICU he received a wonderful blessing from Kaile, my dad, our bishop and the elder quorum president. He started doing better after that. It was so nice to have my parents there to support us and help Kaile and I through this difficult time. Everything went so smoothly with my pregnancy and delivery that having him in the NICU was very hard for me. It was terrible to see him with an IV in his tiny hand and to not be able to get very comfortable because of all the cords and IV's in and on him and the beeping machines and lack of privacy. Needless to say it was hard to have him in the NICU and it was especially hard to have to go home a day early without him. I did however receive the best birthday present ever because on my birthday August 10, we got to bring him home.

Bria...love the new family photo! FYI, Powell was good with kids...it is nerve racking, but we all make our kids wear their life jackets 24-7, right up until bed time. It was fine cause we took the houseboat to a beach (much safer and easier to spot kids in the water). You just have to be vigilant!
