Week 3 Student Choice Assignment
Unit 1 Choice #1
Choice 3: Romans 6, Baptism
1. Review Romans 6:1–13 and answer the following questions in writing:
What must be done with sin before baptism can occur?
Sin must repented of, forsaken, and admitted to the proper authority before baptism can occur.
What events from Christ’s life are symbolized in baptism?
Christ’s death and resurrection are represented in the physical ordinance of baptism by immersion.
Considering this symbolism, why couldn’t someone be baptized by sprinkling?
As a body that has died is immersed beneath the soil, so is the body immersed beneath the water when we are baptized. Sprinkling with water wouldn’t cleanse a person from sin completely because they haven’t been immersed in the water only sprinkled with it.
What do these verses teach us about how we can maintain the “newness of life”?
We can maintain the newness of life by refusing to sin, and by yielding to God as instruments of righteousness. We can also maintain the “newness of life” by partaking of the sacrament each week to renew our covenants and receive remission of sin. Each week through the sacrament we are washed clean again.
According to Mosiah 3:19, what part of us would ideally die at baptism?
The natural man
2. Study Romans 6:14–23. Write a paragraph that describes how we know whose servant we are. Then write a statement identifying the true source of freedom.
First we know whose servants we are because Jesus Christ has “bought” us through the atonement. The marks in his hands and feet and sides show that we are indebted to him forever. Second we know whose servants we are because by the grace of God we will be able to have eternal life if we forsake our sins and keep the commandments.2. Study Romans 6:14–23. True freedom comes from following the will of the Lord. True freedom comes from living the gospel and keeping the commandments. The true source of freedom is Christ.
